Ullswater Camping Weekend

25th - 27 June 2021

Dear Jumblies

Jumbles camping weekend: 25-27 June 2021 Ullswater Yacht Club

With apologies for the rather short notice (blame pandemic uncertainties), this year's camping weekend will take place Covid-19 permitting, of course on the weekend of 25 to 27 June 2021 at Ullswater Yacht Club, near Pooley Bridge in Cumbria.

For those who haven't been before, the club's website gives an idea of its lovely location, and the facilities available as well as practical details like the address (Howtown Road, Pooley Bridge, CA10 2NA). We last visited in 2019 and, as I am sure those who went will attest, had a great time. The club has a decent campsite, a big boat park with wide slipway, and a large clubhouse with good facilities: changing rooms, showers and a very nice bar not that I know much about that kind of thing, of course.

Our usual programme is that we make our own way to the club on Friday. Those who manage to get themselves there in time (not always me, it has to be said!) may, if they wish, go for a sail. We usually go out all together on Saturday for a longer sail, with a stop for a picnic at lunchtime, and a race back. And those who can tear themselves away from their camp bed/ airbed/ sleeping mat on Sunday morning can go for a sail then too

The charges for the weekend are set out on the website, but are as follows:

  • Family - £65 for the weekend (up to 6 people)
  • Single - £45.00 for the weekend
  • Camping is £20 per tent for the weekend.

The total cost for a family with one tent is, therefore, £85; the total for a single person with one tent is £65. The rates cover temporary membership of the club, use of the facilities, and use of the lake.

If you would like to come this time, the club now has a nice new online booking facility, which can be found here (or by going to the UYC home page, then clicking on Book online/Visiting club/ Jumbles Sailing Club). You will need to create an account for yourself first, then follow the instructions to book and pay. It's all fairly intuitive if I can do it, anyone can! The only bit that foxed me slightly was when it asks for a boat name what it actually wants is your boat class, which you can select from the drop-down or (if you sail something slightly obscure like a Hartley) select 'Other,' type in the class and, when it comes up, copy it into the 'Boat name' box.

So you don't need to send me any money to book the weekend no, really, please DON'T! It would be helpful, though, if you could let me know if you are coming along, just so I know who to expect, and to help with planning the weekend.

And if anyone is able and willing to tow the JSC safety boat up to Ullswater, please let me know. We could also do with some volunteers to do a stint crewing it.

Ullswater YC have said that JSC members are welcome to stay for an extra night before or after the official JSC weekend - the charges are £32.50 (family), £22.50 (single) and £10 (tent) per night respectively.

In normal times, the club which has a permanent paid staff, including a chef offers cooked meals. The club are hopeful that they can do the same this year, but that may depend on whether the lifting of pandemic restrictions does in fact follow the timetable set by HM Government. If so, I will let you know the details, cost etc nearer the time so you can decide whether you want to partake. If not, we will have to make our own arrangements.

One last thing - the weekend following our visit (3rd /4th July) is Ullswater YC's Birkett Cup weekend, an annual open event, details of which are on the website. The club have said that if any JSC members attending our camping weekend would like to take part in the Birkett Cup event, they are welcome to leave their boats at UYC in the intervening week. You will need to book onto the event separately though.

I think that's everything, but if anything's not clear or I've missed something please let me know. Otherwise, I shall hope to see you sailing on Ullswater in June!

All the best
